Luca Marini believes Honda has the talent, resources, and determination to return to the front of the MotoGP grid in the near future.
Speaking during his first official media appearance as a Honda factory rider, Marini expressed confidence that the legendary Japanese manufacturer can regain its competitive edge after several challenging seasons.
Marini Begins a New Chapter with Honda
The multi-time MotoGP podium finisher joins the Repsol Honda Team on a two-year contract, replacing Marc Márquez, who moved to Gresini Ducati for the 2024 season. Marini made his first appearance aboard the Honda RC213V during post-season testing at Valencia, finishing an impressive 10th overall, just 0.703 seconds off the fastest time.
Although contractual obligations limited his public comments early on, Marini later shared his excitement about the move in an interview with Honda.
“It was a surprise when Marc announced his decision,” Marini said. “My team, my manager, and I worked quickly to understand this new opportunity. The goal is to grow together, improve the bike, and bring Honda back to winning races and world championships.”
Why Marini Chose Honda
Marini, who previously raced with VR46 Ducati, said the decision to join Honda was driven by the brand’s unmatched legacy.
“First of all, Honda is the most successful team in MotoGP history,” he explained. “The statistics speak for themselves. This is a special moment, and I truly believe we have the quality to return to the top very soon.”
While realistic about the challenges ahead, Marini emphasized the importance of patience and long-term vision.
“I want to start the season with an open mind,” he said. “Fighting for podiums and wins is the goal, but we must look toward the future and build step by step.”
Impressed by Honda’s Culture
Marini also praised Honda’s internal culture and described working with the factory team as a dream come true.
“My first day with Honda felt special,” he said after the Valencia test. “It’s incredible to work with so many experienced and passionate people. The collaboration between the European team and the Japanese engineers is inspiring. I really like the culture, and I believe we can build great synergy.”
Why Has Honda Struggled in MotoGP?
Honda’s recent struggles began after Marc Márquez’s injuries and the disruptions caused by the global pandemic. While Márquez carried the team for years, Honda’s performance decline became noticeable after 2016, despite race wins from riders like Dani Pedrosa, Cal Crutchlow, and Jack Miller.
Since then, the RC213V has faced development challenges, particularly in adapting to modern MotoGP tire and aero demands.
Honda’s Historic Success in MotoGP
Despite recent setbacks, Honda remains the most successful manufacturer in MotoGP history, holding a record 313 premier-class Grand Prix victories. Yamaha follows with 245 wins, while MV Agusta ranks third with 139.
This history is a major reason why riders like Marini believe Honda’s return to the top is only a matter of time.
