Mercedes-Benz CLA EV India Launch Date Confirmed: 792km Range & 20-Min Fast Charging!

I have been waiting for this car for two years. Not because I am a Mercedes fanboy. Because I wanted to see if a luxury EV could finally solve the two problems that keep people away. Range anxiety. Charging wait times.

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA EV just got its India launch date. April 24, 2026. Bookings opened already on March 10. I spent time with the car recently. Drove it. Sat in the back seat. Tried to find things I did not like.

Here is what I learned.

Two Variants. Two Very Different Buyers.

Mercedes-Benz CLA EV

Mercedes is offering two versions of the CLA Electric in India. The CLA 200 Standard Range starts at Rs 55 lakh. It has a 58 kWh battery. Claimed range of 542 km on a full charge.

The CLA 250+ Long Range costs Rs 59 lakh . It gets an 85.5 kWh battery. Claimed range of 792 km.

Four lakh rupees difference. About 250 km extra range. I think most buyers will pick the long range. Not because they need 792 km every day. Because the peace of mind matters.

But here is something interesting. Mercedes added the standard range variant only after customer feedback. People asked for a cheaper entry point. The company listened. That does not happen often.

That 792 KM Number. Let Me Be Honest With You

The 792 km range is measured on the WLTP cycle . WLTP is stricter than the old testing method. But it is still lab testing. Not real world.

During my drive, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA EV review units averaged about 6.3 km per kWh . Do the math on the 85.5 kWh battery. That gives you around 535 km of real range.

Still very good. One of the best in this price range. Just not 792 km. Do not let that discourage you. 535 km of real highway driving is more than enough for a full day of driving. I drove from Bangalore to Nandi Hills and back. The battery dropped maybe 15 percent.

The efficiency matters more than the claimed number. Mercedes claims 93 percent efficiency on the drivetrain . That is unusually high. Most EVs sit around 85 to 88 percent.

20 Minute Charging. I Tested The Claim

Mercedes CLA EV 2026 price

The Mercedes CLA EV 2026 price includes access to 800-volt fast charging technology. This is the real game changer.

Mercedes says the long range version can add 400 km of range in 20 minutes. The standard range adds about 320 km in the same time.

I did not get to test this myself. The charging infrastructure where I drove did not have a 240 kW charger. But I spoke to someone from the Mercedes team. He said the car can pull full power from the start. No tapering off early like some EVs.

Here is what matters for India. Mercedes has tied up with charging networks. Over 9,000 public charging points across the country . The car's navigation system plans routes with charging stops automatically.

No more hunting for a charger on a highway you do not know.

Driving It. This Is Where It Gets Fun?

I drove the CLA 250+ on highways and hills outside Bangalore. The car makes 272 bhp and 335 Nm of torque. Zero to 100 kmph in 6.7 seconds. That is quick. Not Tesla Plaid quick. But quick enough to push you back in your seat.

What surprised me was the power delivery. Most EVs dump all their torque immediately. The CLA does not. It feels more like a petrol car. Smooth. Gradual. You can drive it hard without making passengers sick.

The rear wheel drive setup helps. The car rotates nicely around corners. Steering feedback is good. Light at parking speeds. Heavier on the highway.

Mercedes raised the ground clearance and tuned the suspension for Indian roads . I drove over some rough patches. The car absorbed them well. Only the really big potholes sent a thud into the cabin.

One small complaint. The regen braking is controlled by a stalk behind the steering wheel . Not paddle shifters. It takes time to get used to. I kept reaching for paddles that were not there.

Who Should Buy The CLA 250+ Long Range?

You drive more than 100 km every day. The extra range means you charge at home and never think about public charging.

You take weekend trips out of town. 535 km of real range gets you from Mumbai to Surat and back without stopping.

You want the AMG Line styling. The long range comes with sportier bumpers, aluminium pedals, and 18 inch AMG wheels. It looks noticeably different from the standard range.

You care about resale value. The bigger battery will hold value better. EV buyers in the used market always want more range.

Who Should Save Money And Get The CLA 200 Standard Range?

You mostly drive in the city. 542 km claimed range is plenty for city use. You will charge once a week or less.

You have a home charger. If you can plug in every night, range becomes less important. Save the four lakh rupees.

You do not care about sporty looks. The standard range gets Progressive Line styling. Still nice. Just less aggressive.

You are buying this as a second car. If you have a petrol or diesel SUV for highways, the standard CLA works fine for daily duties.

The Back Seat Problem Nobody Talks About

I am six feet tall. I sat in the back seat for about thirty minutes. My knees fit. Just barely. The wheelbase is longer than the old CLA so knee room is okay . The problem is everything else.

The sloping roofline cuts into headroom. I had to slouch to avoid touching the roof. The underfloor battery pushes the seat up. Your knees sit higher than your hips. Not comfortable for long trips. Getting in and out is awkward too.

The coupe roofline means you duck low. The door opening is smaller than a normal sedan. Mercedes admits this car is not for chauffeur-driven owners . They are right. If someone else drives you around, buy the E-Class instead.

Front seats are fine. Well bolstered. Comfortable for hours. Just do not plan on carrying three tall adults in the back.

The Screen Situation. Good And Bad

The CLA has a 14 inch central touchscreen and a 10.25 inch driver display. The screens are crisp. Responsive. The new MB.OS software works smoothly.

Mercedes integrated AI into the system. ChatGPT and Google Gemini power the voice assistant. I asked it to find a charging station near Nandi Hills. It worked. No delays. No confusion. Here is the annoying part. There are almost no physical buttons.

Climate control is in the touchscreen. You have to take your eyes off the road to change the temperature. There are capacitive touch buttons below the screen for volume and drive modes. But those are hard to use without looking.

I prefer buttons. Physical ones you can feel. Mercedes went all in on screens. Some people will love it. Some will hate it.

Frunk. Yes. A Frunk

The CLA has a 101 litre front trunk . That is where the engine would be in a petrol car. I put a small duffel bag in it. Fit fine. The rear boot is 405 litres. Also a good size.

Having both means you can separate dirty items from clean ones. Or store charging cables up front and luggage in the back.

Small detail. But thoughtful.

How It Compares To Rivals?

BMW iX1 LWB starts around Rs 48 lakh. Cheaper than the CLA. But the range is shorter. The interior feels older. The CLA wins on technology and efficiency.

BYD Seal is priced similarly. The Seal has good range and quick charging. But the brand perception is different. Some buyers want the three pointed star. Some do not care. Both are good cars. Drive both before deciding.

No direct Tesla competitor in this price range in India yet. The Model 3 would compete if it were here. It is not.

The CLA's biggest advantage is the combination of range, charging speed, and service network. Mercedes has been in India for decades. Their service centers are everywhere. That matters when something goes wrong.

Delivery Timelines. Realistic Expectations

Deliveries for the CLA 250+ Long Range start by end of April 2026. Right after the launch on April 24. The CLA 200 Standard Range arrives in June 2026. Two month gap.

If you book now, you might get the long range by May. The standard range by July or August. Mercedes is importing these as completely built units from Germany. No local assembly announced yet. That means waiting times could stretch if demand is high.

What I Would Do If I Were Buying?

I would get the CLA 250+ Long Range in Patagonia Red. The red looks incredible in person. I saw it at the drive event. Every person stopped to look at it. I would skip any optional packages that add weight or reduce range.

Bigger wheels look nice but hurt efficiency. Keep the standard 18 inches. I would install the home wall box. Mercedes offers it for Rs 50,000. Free if you pre book. The wall box charges at 22 kW. Much faster than a regular plug point.

I would not buy this car if I regularly carried three adults in the back. The rear seat is too cramped. Buy an EQS or a petrol E-Class instead.

The Final Thoughts

The Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is not perfect. The back seat is tight. The lack of buttons annoys me. The real world range is 535 km, not 792 km. But everything else works.

The driving experience is refined. The charging speed is best in class. The efficiency is genuinely impressive. The technology feels current, not outdated. At Rs 59 lakh for the long range, it is expensive. But compare it to other luxury EVs with similar range. The price starts to make sense.

If you want an electric sedan that looks good, drives well, and does not leave you searching for chargers every 300 km, the CLA is probably your best option right now. If you need a comfortable back seat for tall adults, look elsewhere.

That is the honest truth.
